Enabling Technologies―Integration that Drives Patient Care

TeleTracking’s Jon Poshywak, Vice President & General Manager, Enabling Technologies joins us on this episode of the Patient Flow Podcast to discuss the key points to consider when implementing enabling technologies into overall hospital operations. Jon also shares information on the different types of locating technologies and the tremendous amount of data—and the overall integration—made possible by these solutions.

Episode breakdown:

  • There are a number of technologies that can be used and each has a different use case.  For example, passive RTLS traditionally is higher in cost due to infrastructure, but the cost of tags is much lower.
  • TeleTracking’s enabling technologies team spends a great deal of time working with hospitals and health systems before making a technology recommendation―not only based on what they want to accomplish now, but also what the goal is two, three, and five years from now.

Insights from TeleTracking’s Nurse Experts―National Nurses Week & the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in Patient Flow

  • The DAISY Foundation [DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System] was created in 1999 to recognize nurses for their extraordinary skills and the compassionate care that they provide to patients and families. It was established by the family J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of ITP, as a thank you to the nurses who cared for him during his illness.
  • Patients are central to TeleTracking’s mission to ensure that no one will ever have to wait for the care they need―making a partnership with the DAISY Foundation a way to visibly demonstrate the important role nursing plays in effective patient flow. In 2016 the DAISY Foundation added a new award, the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in Patient Flow to recognize the nurses who work with patients behind the scenes, making sure that they receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place.
  • National Nurses Week is the perfect time to focus on nursing’s role in improving patient flow―given the aging population in our country, the increasing healthcare needs, the complexity and rising costs of care, and shrinking reimbursements.
  • Effective patient flow leads to better patient outcomes. For example, when a health system has a patient flow strategy in place, they typically see decreases in emergency department [ED] boarding hours, which means patients are being placed directly in the right bed, at the right level of care, can start treatment and go home sooner.
  • Senior leadership engagement and interdisciplinary councils need to be a part of any patient flow strategy because it takes a full team to look at flow and work together to coordinate it in a more seamless way.

The Art and Science of Patient Discharge

Deb Kaczynski, Managing Consultant with TeleTracking’s advisory services team, joins us for this episode of the Patient Flow Podcast.  Deb discusses that while creating capacity early in the day in order to accommodate and reduce wait times for ED (emergency department) arrivals and PACU (post-anesthesia care unit) patients, it’s also important to be mindful of putting too much pressure on valuable hospital resources.

NYU Winthrop Hospital Uses Data to Drive Joint Commission Compliance

Ann Hanford, Director of Patient Flow at NYU Winthrop Hospital joins us for this episode of the Patient Flow Podcast.  Hanford discusses how her team used TeleTracking’s reporting capabilities to develop comprehensive documentation to demonstrate compliance with The Joint Commission.

Episode Breakdown:

  • The team used different reports from solutions such as BedTracking®, TransportTracking® and PreAdmitTracking® to establish baseline performance, set goals and create action plans for improvement.
  • Priorities included: improving the efficiency of the bed cleaning process, improving bed placement times for newly admitted patients, enhancing the situational awareness of patient discharge status on each unit, improving the efficiency of patient transport
  • Action plans for each priority have had a positive impact on clinical, operational and financial metrics, including decreases in bed request to occupy time; decreases in patient transport trip times; and increases in the number of patient discharged by noon.

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System Maximizes Operating Room Suites

Charlotte Damato, Lean-Six Sigma Quality Coach for Sarasota Memorial Health Care System [SMH] in Sarasota, Florida joins us for this episode of the Patient Flow Podcast.  Damato discusses how increased demand impacted SMH and led to the decision to improve the efficiency of their existing 34 operating room suites. Through a combination of TeleTracking’s Clinical Workflow™ Suite, Lean techniques and process redesign, and staff development, SMH increased on-time surgery starts, decreased OR turnover time and increased utilization.

Episode Breakdown:

  • Key factors that needed to be addressed were the redesign of OR processes; availability of equipment and instrumentation for surgeons to start on time; and improved communication between pre-op and OR suites.
  • Almost immediately the number of phone calls from the OR to the peri-operative area dropped because staff could see every patient who was either in registration, or in surgery check-in.
  • Surgeons were engaged in the process and committed to its success.
  • Collaboration with the Manager of Transport in getting the first cases of the day where they need to be in a timely manner.
  • Expansion to the catherization lab and endoscopy areas in 2018.

Patient Volumes on the Rise with Transfer Center Technology I Part One

Elisa Ayers, Director of Patient Placement Center, Baylor Scott and White Health  joins us on this episode of Patient Flow Podcast.  Elisa discusses the strides BS&W has made since opening their transfer center in 2009 in order to streamline and improve the patient transfer experience for patients, physicians and hospital staff.

Episode Breakdown:

  • BS&W focused on in-patient volume first, which taught them a lot about building relationships with physicians, understanding what it was that they were looking for, and what they needed to make a decision about bringing a patient into the healthcare system.
  • There has been a shift in perceptions about what a community medical center can provide making it possible to keep patients in their community rather than sending them to the Dallas campus.
  • An executive committee was formed to look at the transfer center process as a whole.
  • BS&W has started the process of centralizing patient placement which will provide quicker access to bed availability at the different campuses.
